BIO

Scott & James

My name is Scott Bazzett, and Seven Ravens is the culmination of a musical partnership that began when I met James LePak in high school, back in 1986.  We met through our mutual friend, Don Boyette and hit it off right away. Both of us were born in Michigan and grew up as military brats. We both lived in California and Germany before both ending up at the same high school in Maryland. (What are the odds?) Finding that we had similar interests and musical influences, we formed a fast friendship and spent a lot of time listening to, and talking about music, before eventually forming a band and writing music of our own. I thought we were clearly going to be the next Dokken, and as such, bound to become incredibly rich and famous, but alas, our band never made it out of the drummer's garage. We had a lot of fun and wrote a lot of songs though, and our shared influences and passion for music, kept us writing  together.

After high school, I went to Pennsylvania for college and James moved to Seattle where he played in a few local bands until grunge pushed our type of music out of fashion. Over the years, we stayed in touch and kept writing together. In the early days, we mailed tapes back and forth (We were WAY ahead of our time!); later, we adapted to new technology and started sharing files online. Through moves, marriages, kids, divorces, and career changes, we kept writing, and over time we built up a catalog of more than 80 recordings, with James handling the music and guitar work while I focused on lyrics, melodies and vocals.

In late 2019 James got some new software and by 2020, we had a batch of new songs that really stood out to us. With recording quality better than ever, and our songs coming out really well, I felt it was time to take things to the next level. I started reaching out to other musicians— some friends and some favorites; some people we knew, and some we just knew we liked. I tracked them down online and brought them together into what would become Seven Ravens. What began as our long-running collaboration evolved into a full project, blending the style we’d developed over decades into something we were truly proud of.

In May 2021, we released our debut album, Barely Hanging On, and followed it up with After the Storm in August 2023.

After those two records, I thought it would be a good idea to switch gears and try releasing singles, but after one, I quickly realized that approach didn’t really fit us and we paused to figure out our next move. Around that time, Ryan from Eonian Records reached out with the idea of putting together a compilation—something that could combine new, unreleased tracks with remastered older material and help us reach listeners who might have missed us the first time around. It felt like the right move, so we pulled everything together into a collection we’re really excited about.

At its core, Seven Ravens is still what it’s always been: James and me writing songs the way we always have, just now with the added energy and talent of other incredible musicians. We’re continuing to write, record, and see where this journey takes us next.
